How to create an out-and-back route
If your club (or you) has a route that goes from one point to another, you do not need to draw a new route for every distance: the app cuts the route where it should and comes back the same way.
How it works
An out-and-back route leaves a point, goes to a turnaround point and returns the same way. For a total distance of D, the app runs half (D / 2) of your base route and comes back. Example: with a 22 km route, a 10K is cut at km 5 and returns the same way; the total is ≈ 10 km.
Step by step
-
Get the base route as a GPX
It has to be a one-way route: from the start to the destination (not a loop, and not a route that already comes back). You can export it from your watch, Strava, Komoot, Garmin Connect or another app, or choose one from the Routes section of the page.
-
Open it in the app
Go to Out-and-back route and tap Upload GPX file (or drag the file in), or pick a route from the list. You will see the route in blue on the map.
-
Enter the total distance
Type the distance you want to run in total (for example 10) or tap a shortcut (5K, 10K, 15K, 21K…). The app instantly draws the out-and-back route in red, with an R marker at the turnaround point. The maximum distance is twice your base route: with 22 km you can go up to 44 km.
-
Check the map and the profile
Look at the elevation profile (it goes up and down along the same path) and the kilometer marks. You can reverse the direction if you prefer to start from the other end, or switch to miles with the unit button on the map.
-
Useful options (optional)
In Options you can enter your pace to see the estimated time and the splits per km table, your start time to see when you finish and when the sun rises or sets, and adjust the time for uphills and downhills. If the file includes the organizer’s points (water, restrooms…), the ones that fall within your stretch are kept.
-
Download your GPX
Tap Download GPX (or the share button to send it to another app). Want several distances at once? Use Generate multiple distances and download them all in a ZIP. Then load the file on your watch.
Tips
- 21K is exactly 21.00 km, not 21.0975 (the official half-marathon distance). You can type any other distance in the field.
- If your file is already out-and-back (the way back repeats the path), you can still upload it, but watch the maximum distance: the app will think the route is twice as long. Ideally, upload only the way out.
- Your file is not uploaded to any server: it is processed in your browser and the original is never modified.
